specific/site-sensitive audiovisual performance that took place on 3, 4, 5 and 6 September 2020 at the Temple Tolstraat, a national monument located in Amsterdam Zuid scheduled to be transformed into a creative hub in 2021.Building as Opera has been developed in close collaboration with artist Nina Glockner, the opera singer Persephone Abbott and performer Levi de Kleer. Project supported by Gementee Amsterdam Stokroos Foundation&nbsp; Old School Amsterdam Documentation: Justina Nekrašaitė and&nbsp; Jörg Nettingsmeier The performance is devised around the multiple histories and transitions of the building that amongst its previous functions it served as a temple for the Theosophical Society, a synagogue, a cinema, a mosque, a public library as well as a temporary artist studio. The building is transformed into a character in the performance, articulating its own voice through a collection of voices from its past and present translated into music/sound fragments. The operatic performance echoes the cultural and societal changes that materialized within the space throughout its existence. Within its strong architectural context and for the duration of a sunset, the audience witnessed together the overlays of multiple spaces, imagined and real; a space in transition. On 26 August 2020, the text MOVE CLOSER, FURTHER AWAY has been placed on the façade (windows) of the building Tolstaat 160. The project ambition was to push boundaries, shaping a space that differs from the white cube and its traditional cut between passive audience and artist. The project combined three main participating artists: Alina Lupu, Isabel Cordeiro and Nina Glockner. It created opportunities for three emerging local artists to develop new works, and present them to the public within a different framework. The project expanded throughout the time creating more possibilities for exchange and development. ‘There is a wall to be crossed, and I am the wall’ is a project that explored and questioned the core elements of art curation and creation. This initiative challenged the form and content of what exhibition and artistic practice mean, their boundaries, limitations and opportunities. In Amsterdam, in the neighbourhood of Betondorp. Alina Lupu is a conceptual artist. Her interests are centred on the social aspects and influences of everyday life on artistic practice, as well as on the impact that an artist can have on his or her surroundings. 'Fieldwork' aims to be an investigation into making closer to home.In the month of February 2018, Alina moved to the neighbourhood of Betondorp, in the East of Amsterdam. For the first time, she realised the potentials and pitfalls of being grounded within the Dutch context.Following the mantra of “bloom where you’re planted”, Alina proceeded to engage with her immediate surroundings, digging into the history and current composition of the neighbourhood where she ended up living. This neighbourhood happens to have a history merging housing ideals of living integrated within nature through the concept of the garden-village, workers struggles in trying to build with a material (concrete) which 100 years ago just happened to pose issues of abandoning craftsmanship for mass production. There are ideals, and then there’s realised living. There are shared spaces, and then there’s current city development.An attempt to sort through them all, no matter their complication, will nonetheless be made, in time. Images: Vera Mennens (...) this exhibition is a sort of 'field experiment' whereby two different operating planes are set in motion, unfolding alongside each other within the at7 space: On one level, the sketching of a dimension of phantasmic indexicality that manifests itself in the encounter between different works, with their singular corporealities, in space. On another level, the aligning of the aforementioned dimension to a realm of vitalisitc fantasies (Graw). A realm we (humble humans) enact through the projection of intersubjective relations with the works, once again, with their singular corporealities, in space. In the intersections of these two operating planes we may (or may not) perceive glimpses of what “life without negativity” (Tomšič) potentially is: a life force, or elan vital, that is expressed freely and autonomously without encountering limitations, no obstacles, or conflicts (Graw).
